Nick, cancer patient
"My birthday is January 31, and I got the diagnosis that I had leukemia on January 30. So, yeah, that sucked. At first I was pretty bummed I had to spend my birthday in the hospital, but THEN my friends came to visit me. They took off their first period classes at school to come to the hospital and we got to play on the Wii. And then two Earthquakes soccer players came to visit. They heard it was my birthday and stopped by my room! Also, Jake (the child life specialist) came and gave me a baseball signed by Willie Mays. So that was the best birthday present."
"The hospital arranged for me and my family to go to a baseball game with some other patients, and that's actually where I became friends with some other patients. Just being able to meet someone who has gone through the same thing—it's just so nice. Even if we're not talking about it, it's good to be with someone who understands."
